Russian Music in the perid of WWI and the October Revolution

The CD represents Russian music of the first third of the 20th century, created by two great Russian composers – Prokofiev and Medtner. Most of these works were written in the period of World War I and the October Revolution, so they reflect the tension that must have filled the composers’ life at this time. War and Revolution had major impacts on the Russian people, economy and arts. For me, as a pianist, it was important to find the key to understanding how to interpret the works of this epoch.
Medtner was an extremely influential, “cult” figure for a whole generation of the Russian intellectual élite. Some thought of him as an innovator where others considered him an arch-conservative.
I admire the profundity of his musical insights and beauty of his melodies. The 4th sonata by Prokofiev is a masterpiece, a “secret” and introvert work. The music of this sonata is predominantly slow, and frequently gloomy, it conceals riches which are not immediately obvious to the eye. Its mysterious atmosphere fascinates me.

Она была написана в неспокойное время огромных перемен в России и мире, и отражает смятенный тревожный дух эпохи. Для меня, как пианиста, было важно найти ключ к пониманию того как интерпретировать произведения этого периода.
Метнер был влиятельной, «культовой» фигурой для целого поколения российской интеллектуальной элиты. Он тонко чувствовал выразительные возможности фортепиано, его произведения предъявляют к исполнителю высокие требования. Я восхищаюсь глубиной его музыкальной мысли и красотой мелодий.
Четвертая соната Прокофьева привлекает меня своей таинственностью, загадочностью, сказочностью. Это подлинный шедевр прокофьевской музыки, образы и смыслы которого глубоко сокровенны..
